Day 5 – Spring Mill to McCormick’s Creek State Park

This morning we departed Spring Mill State Park for a 60 mile ride up to McCormick’s Creek State Park where we will spend the night.  It was overcast and mid 60’s when we left, which turned to sunny and mid 80’s by the time we arrived.  As with every day, the terrain is generally hilly with occasional stretches of flat and a few challenging 15 degree plus climbs.  Interstate 69 is under construction in this area, so we had some gravel truck traffic out on the roads.

We stopped for a sandwich at the Yoho General Store in Solsberry (which is basically just a crossroad out in the country).  Three brothers, Frank, Oscar, and William Yoho opened a general store across the street from the current store back in 1904.  That building burned in 1933 and the next year the current store was constructed.  In 2012 a restoration project was undertaken to help preserve the historical structure.  Walking in is like walking back 50 years in time with the wood plank flooring, wooden shelves, and old stove.

Upon arrival at McCormick’s Creek State Park I was able to get photos of several of the riders as they arrived.  Following another very good buffet dinner a gentleman native to the area gave a talk about the natural aspects of the park including information about the persimmon and pawpaw trees.
